What Iris is

Iris is an AI journaling companion, not a person and not a crisis service. It can’t call for help, contact anyone on your behalf, or replace a professional. Iris will always tell you it’s an AI if you ask.

Iris is for adults 18 and over. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.

How Iris responds when someone may be at risk

This is our protocol for conversations about suicide, self-harm or harming others.

What Iris is instructed to do. Iris is instructed never to encourage, describe or give instructions for self-harm or suicide. When someone expresses intent to harm themselves or others, Iris stops its usual reflective conversation, says plainly that it isn’t equipped for this, urges them to contact emergency services or a crisis line right away, and stays present without probing for details.

A crisis notice in typed conversations. When Iris recognizes that someone may be at risk, it raises a crisis notice: the app shows a card under Iris’s reply with helplines and a Get help now button that opens the helplines screen.

In voice conversations, Iris says this out loud and points to emergency services and crisis lines. Voice calls don’t show the card yet; Get help now is always in Settings.

Nothing is remembered. Thoughts of self-harm, suicide or crisis episodes are never saved as memories, and conversations that touch on them get no recap.

What we count. We count how many crisis notices are shown, without any conversation content or anything that identifies you, so we can report these numbers to authorities where the law requires it (for example, California’s Office of Suicide Prevention).

How we keep it working. We review reports from users and update this protocol and Iris’s instructions as we learn.

Reporting a response

If a reply from Iris is harmful, offensive or wrong, long-press it and choose Report. We review reports and use them to make Iris safer.
